Camilla Cantu (She/Her)
Music Production Teaching Artists
Camilla Cantu is a dynamic, Detroit-based audio alchemist. A multi-musician, vocalist, music educator, DJ and producer, her sound explores sonic waves channeled through many mediums including rhythmic guitar, electronic production, and airy vocals to create original, and alluring compositions. A mariachi of ten years,Cantu’s sounds pull from the Motown city and Latin diaspora, blending them with live instrumentation as well as electronically produced music to create colorful, groovy soundscapes that transport listeners to her creative state of mind. She is an accomplished young artist that has toured nationally with Latin-Grammy winning woman mariachi group Flor de Toloache, toured internationally as a vocalist under the Berlin Youth Artist Exchange Program, and recently opened for legendary Latino-group Los Lobos at Sonic Lunch in Ann Arbor. In recent years, she has stepped into a music educator role and works with children and teens in Detroit; her teaching style emphasizes personal exploration of sounds and rhythms, and encourages students to explore their own individualism through music. Over the course of two years she has worked with schools like Marygrove Elementary, and non-profits such as Detroit Hispanic Development corporation and Motor City Street Dance Academy (MCSDA) to bring music education to over 80 youth in Detroit. She has been certified as an electronic music educator by Ableton in order to bring high-quality education and pedagogy to her classroom. Camilla believes creating should be accessible to all; she works with local non-profits to lead initiatives such as a music production class that is free to young women under Living Arts, while also offering free guitar classes to youth through MCSDA
